Summer in the city

In between thunderstorms, Emmett and his mom spend their summer days going to farmers markets, talking long walks, and checking out neighbourhood parks. One of their favourites is the recently renovated Central Memorial park, complete with fountains to play in. They had a picnic in the park yesterday with Emmett's friend Owen, who is a month older than Emmett.

Both boys tried peaches for the first time. They were suction cupped to the fruit, barely allowing their mothers to have a bite. (Then again, who would want a bite after a baby has slobbered all over it?)

After lunch, they donned their swimsuits to check out the fountains, followed by crawling competitions on fresh cut grass.

Toys of a ten month old

Empty Cheerios boxes, blocks, board books and cans of club soda (they roll really well across a kitchen floor, perfect for chasing). Emmett is not particular when it comes to the toys he plays with, but these are a few of his favourites.

Emmett's mom fell prey to nostalgia when she found a childhood toy recently, the iconic chatterbox telephone by Fisher Price. Warm memories of talking to her imaginary friends and spinning the rotary dial came back to her. In a moment of weakness, she bought the toy for Emmett, even though Emmett would never use or see a rotary dial phone like this in his life.

After watching the googly eyes go wiggly for a few minutes, Emmett ditched the phone and headed after his favourite toy, an empty, vintage Gatorade container. The ultimate in low-tech.

So much for the chatterbox telephone.

Dislocated shoulder

Summer has finally arrived where Emmett lives. Some people take a cool shower to deal with the heat. Emmett employs the Mel Gibson Lethal Weapon 2 approach. He self-dislocates his shoulder and allows the blinding pain to lull him to sleep.

Sylvan Lake shenanigans

Emmett and his parents spent the weekend at Sylvan lake, hanging out with cousins. Emmett seemed less than impressed with wearing a lifejacket, going for a swim and a boat ride.

He really enjoyed tubing though.

And got quite a kick of hanging out with his cousin Sophie.

Emmett's first Stampede

Under an ominous dark sky,

Emmett and his parents headed to the Stampede grounds, sporting their finest in western duds.

Stampede attendance has been abysmal this year due to the weather; in fact, for the first time in 85 years, the rodeo and chuckwagon races were cancelled. The day they were there, the heavens opened with hail the size of golf balls, but that didn't stop Emmett from taking in the sights at Weadickville, the stock dog trials,

the agricultural barns, and of course, the midway. Emmett introduced his parents to all the kid stuff at Stampede, where he made his own button, had his free vintage Stampede picture taken, and won a prize at the duck races. He's been practicing for months with his ducks in the bathtub.

Emmett's parents, in return, introduced Emmett to all their favourite foods at Stampede, including $2.50 hotdogs from Weadickville, $2.00 slurpees, $1.00 milk and cookies, pulled pork parfait, beef on a bun (Emmett's mom's favourite) and corndogs (Emmett's dad's favourite).

Giddy'up, cowboy!

Ten months old

Spain beats the Netherlands 1-0 to capture the FIFA World Cup title. A powerful earthquake hits Chile for the second time this year. Fewer people flock to the Calgary Stampede so far this year, with attendance down by about 13,601 people. A giant lobster trap has resurfaced after it went missing from Summerside, P.E.I. And Emmett celebrates his ten month birthday. His parents let him have pizza for dinner, which he hoovered after skipping breakfast and lunch.

And with each passing month, it gets more and more challenging to capture his birthday photo...
