And away he goes...

Emmett woke up at 6am this morning, absolutely vibrating about his first day of Kindergarten. (His parents will no doubt remind him of this when is is 16 and they have to shake him awake to get to school on time).

He was the first one ready...

...having done alot of prep work the night before.

He was accompanied by Mom, Dad and Oscar to school. Aside from needing to hold a hand as he headed into his new classroom, and a few tears (from Mom, as she left the school), his first day started as it should. In his own words...

The night before Kindergarten

Twas the night before Kindergarten and all through the house
not a creature was stirring, except for one spouse.
The lunch had been packed
In the lunchbox with care
By his mom and his dad
Who were battling despair.

Their almost 5-year-old son was nestled
all snug in his bed
as visions of his first day of school
danced in his head.

I was in the kitchen
checking the snacks
making sure none violated
the rules for the pack.

On Yogurt!
On Goldfish!
On Cheese Strings and more
Bananas, grapes and apples
Nutritionally...a score.
So many snacks, which ones to choose?
I must pick the ones that won’t receive any “boos”.
To the top of the fridge, to the bottom cupboard drawer,
Yogurt and banana you win the award.

What to do with their days?
His parents wondered, quite subdued.
They planned out the ways
They’d find work to do.
But they couldn’t replace
All those sounds they would miss.
Or the games they would play,
All those owies they’d kiss.

“Our babies are grown!”
Cried the one to the other.
“Not yet,”  came the thought,
No:
“There is another.”
Four more years, little one. Grow up slowly...your parents can't handle it.

In the garden

Emmett and his Mom harvest a bumper crop of carrots from the garden, just in time for school.

Graduation

June.

All over the city, province and country, thousands of students are finishing one chapter of their lives and getting ready to move on to the next one. Graduation. Emmett donned his best duds, and he and his pals at preschool/daycare celebrated in style, as they all get ready to move on to Kindergarten in September. The ceremony had certificates, mortarboards, songs, several dozen parents and a sandwich bar for lunch. Fortunately, it was void of the "lobster-in-the-toilet" prank.

U6 Soccer

It is uncertain which is more difficult...herding a group of 12 under six year olds (of which one of them is your child) or managing the group of parents. Either way, Emmet's Dad is finding his stride coaching Emmett's soccer team this year.

Hello Penguin Parents!

Third time's a charm -- looks like we will finally have some nice weather for soccer on Wednesday night.  Huzzah!

As we were last week, we will be in the SOUTHWEST corner of the field.

Oh, and as a side note, if you haven't already, I strongly recommend you take advantage of the free May skills clinics offered through PASS.  I have appended the soccer director's email at the bottom of the message -- just click on the link to register.

See you all tomorrow,
Coach Jeff

Modern technology

StranMcCann joined the wave of new technology recently. They purchased a MICROWAVE OVEN and are now current with 1960's gadgets. (Truth be told, the microwave was purchased in August and sat in the furnace room until earlier this week, when Emmett's Mom, tired of drinking cold tea, cracked it open and set it up).

Emmett is quite fascinated with it.

What will be next for this cutting edge foursome? Cable?

Preschool curriculum

A fairly average, typical month in the life of Emmett the preschooler. An educational curriculum, balancing language, social and group activities.

Can't wait to hear what Emmett learns on Monday, March 31...

Men's Olympic Gold medal game

Like most of the nation, Emmett got up earlier than usual today.

Unlike most of the nation, he did not get up early to watch the gold medal hockey final between Canada and Sweden. Inspired by the nail biting women's gold medal game, our men's team also did us proud as they defeated Sweden 3 - 0 and captured the gold medal. Whether it was in a bar, an airport, a Tim Horton's, or on an iPhone-because-you-don't-own-a-tv-or-subscribe-to-cable, the early rise for the puck drop at 5am can only be described as a truly Canadian moment.

No, our Emmett was up AND dressed at 5:30am this morning for other reasons. Fueled by the excitement only a four year old can feel, he catapulted out of bed in anticipation of seeing...the LEGO Movie, an event that has been on the StranMcCann calendar for weeks.

Emmet: An ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

And really, a movie about LEGO with a main character named Emmet? No wonder he was excited.

The quirks of an 80 year old house

Although Chateau StranMcCann was extensively renovated and remodeled by the previous owners in the past ten years, the house maintains some of it's 80 year old heritage.

Ornate lighting fixtures...

Built in wooden shelves with glass doors...

Brown brick fireplace (with living room mess cleverly hidden from the lens of the camera)...

Original oak hardwood floor...

Ornamental feature (the exact term escapes Emmett and Oscar's sleep deprived mother)...

Curved wall from living room to dining room

Original heating register

It is here that the eldest of the StranMcCann boys decided, on his own, to pee. Not when he was sleepwalking. Not in a moment of urgency, when he couldn't make it to the bathroom and sought out an alternative. He just looked at it and in his four year old mind, thought, "I should try peeing in there". Much to the chagrin of his parents, who are utterly perplexed by this activity.

His little brother Oscar, was also quite upset to learn about the pee-in-the-heat-register, as one day, he will share this room with Emmett.

Selfie

In a week when Oxford Dictionaries crowns 'selfie' the 2013 Word Of The Year, Emmett's mom sees fit to provide a how2 tutorial on self-photography.

4 weeks and 2 lbs later

He's been on the planet exactly four weeks, and has put on two full pounds, bringing his weight up to 9 lbs 7 oz. Must be all the food he is getting from his Mommy, Auntie Clare, Daddy and Emmett.
